The Catholic church teaches that the Pope has the supreme authority over the universal church in all matters of faith, morals, discipline and government. It is claimed that the Pope derives his authority directly from Christ. The Catholic church did not claim papal infallibility until 1870 at the First Vatican Council. The council was not unanimous on its decision. Gregory VII who was pope from 1073 to 1087 under the “Dictates of Hildebrand”, occur the following:

1.  That the Roman pontiff alone is justly styled universal

2.  That no person – may live under the same roof with one excommunicated by the Pope.

That all princes should kiss his feet only.

That it’s lawful for him to depose emperors.

That his sentence is not to be reviewed by any one, while he alone can review the decision of all others.

That he can be judged by no one.

That the Roman Church never erred, nor will it, according to the Scriptures, ever err”.

That no one is to be accounted a Catholic who does not harmonize with the Roman Church.

That he can absolve subjects from their allegiance to unrighteous rulers.

The Pope has assumed infallibility, which belongs only to God. The Church professes to forgive sins, which belongs only to God. They profess to open and shut heaven, which only belongs to God. They confess to be higher than all the kings of the earth, which belongs only to God. Let us not forget the Spanish Inquisition where more than 300,000 suffered persecution and of whom 31,912 died in the flames for their faith. Millions more were slain throughoutEurope. The Church of Rome has shed more innocent blood than any other institution that has ever existed among mankind. By order of Pope Pius V, in 1566, changed the Sabbath day from Saturday to Sunday, which is now the Lord’s Day. In the Catholic catechism the second commandment that forbids the making of, and bowing down to images, is omitted, and in the tenth, which forbids coveting, is divided into two. In light of the history of the Catholic Church it is difficult to believe it is the one true church and the Pope is infallible. The Church claims all authority is given by Christ through Matthew 16:17-19. “Good for you, Simon, son of John” answered Jesus. “For this truth did not come to you from any human being, but by my Father in heaven. And so I tell you, Peter: you are a rock, and on this rock foundation I will build my church and not even death will ever be able to overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: what you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven, and what you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” Later Peter rebuked Jesus and was told by Jesus “Get away from me, Satan! You are an obstacle in my way because these thoughts of yours don’t come from God, but from man” (Matthew 16:21-23). It seems Peter is not infallible either.
